Steamed Caramel Sponge Cake Recipe with Step by Step Pictures.

Simple sponge cake which is steamed to perfection. It has a caramel topping which is sticky and goes well with the sponge.The cake needs just a handful of ingredients and it is super easy to make as well.

This is a recipe which i created, since i had few eggwhites leftover from my mayonnaise. So I put that in good use. I created this recipe and when i was steaming i was quite skeptical how the cake will turn out since there is no fat in this recipe. But to my surprise it turned out perfect.  The cake was soft and little moist from the caramel topping.

Spongy cake which has a caramel topping. The cake is steamed and the sponge turned out so pillowy and soft with a sticky caramel sauce.

Ingredients
FOR CAKE:
  • Egg Whites - 2
  • Powdered Sugar - ¼ cup (50 grams)
  • All Purpose Flour / Maida - ½ cup (60 grams)
  • Baking Powder - ½ tsp
  • Vanilla Extract - ½ tsp
FOR CARAMEL:
  • Sugar - ¼ cup
  • Water - 3 tblsp
Instructions
  1. Take sugar and water in a sauce pan and cook till it is caramelized. Now pour this in a heat proof bowl and swirl the pan so it coats.
  2. Now make batter, take egg whites in a bowl and use a beater to whip till fluffy.
  3. Now add sugar slowly and keep beating.
  4. Now add in the flour mixture and fold gently.
  5. Spoon this over the caramel and place it in a pan, fill with water half way through the bowl.
  6. Cover the bowl with a plate so no water enteres.
  7. Now cover the whole pan and steam for 25 to 30 mins.
  8. Insert a knife to check whether the cake is done or not.
  9. Unmould and serve.

7)Pour caramel into the pan.

10)Use a beater to whip the egg whites

12)Add in powdered sugar little by little

17)PLace it on a kadai with water

18)Cover the pan with a lid

19)Cover the whole thing and steam for 15 to 20 mins

20)Now it is cooked

21)Unmould
