Aval Upma | Poha Upma

Aval Upma is quick and easy to make and serves as a filling breakfast. Aval Upma is a mild spicy tasty dish made by cooking poha with tempered onions, lentils and spices. How to make Aval Upma is featured in this post with step by step pictures. Aval Upma Recipe
Aval Upma is a quick and easy to prepare and tasty breakfast. Aval upma could be had as a snack or a wholesome breakfast or dinner by adding cooked veggies to the upma. I have already posted a simple poha upma recipe, this is just a variation to the usual aval upma we make.

About Aval Upma

Aval upma is very handy to me especially when I run out of idli dosa batter and want a quick breakfast fix. Hubby has no complaints too, he loves aval upma with sugar sprinkled…yes thats his way of eating.

Aval Upma 2 ways

  • Aval upma with vegetables – This can be a wholesome and filling if you are making it for breakfast with vegetables.
  • Aval upma without vegetables – This is a quick version made without vegetables can be had for snack.

Aval Upma Ingredients

  • Poha : You can choose either thick poha or thin poha as per the availability and preference. Make sure to soak and drain accordingly that is the key for perfect poha recipe.
  • Vegetables : You can use vegetables like potato, carrot, peas and beans but make sure to cook and add it. Do not mush the vegetables it should be slightly crunchy.
  • Spices : A simple tadka is made using mustard seeds, curry leaves. Turmeric powder is also used for flavour and color.
  • Nuts: You can either add peanuts or cashewnuts for the crunch.
  • Garnish : Garnish with grated coconut or coriander leaves.

Aval Upma | Poha Upma

Ingredients

To temper

  • 2 tsp oil
  • 3/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • a sprig curry leaves
  • a pinch hing

Instructions

  • Pressure cook carrot peas for 3-4 whistles with enough water, dont drain the water,Set aside.Soak poha in water till immersing level.Meanwhile heat a kadai with oil – add the items listed under ‘to temper’ let it splutter.
  • Add turmeric powder and give a quick stir then add onions saute till slightly browned.Now add cooked veggies along with spice powders and required salt.Let the veggies blend with the masala powders.
  • Now add soaked poha…by now poha would have absorbed the water fully.Give a quick mix and cook for 2mins.Finally add roasted peanut, garnish with coriander leaves and switch off.
  • Serve hot as a teatime snack or for breakfast too!

Notes

  • You can even add tomatoes with onions.
  • You have lot of variations to this easy upma, skip jeera while tempering add roasted jeera powder.You can even add a pinch of sambar powder.
  • Adding veggies is your choice, you can add favorite veggies of your choice.
  • You can even add 2 tbsp of coconut for extra crunch.

  • You can even add tomatoes with onions.

Poha Upma

Poha Upma is one of the easiest and quick snack that can be made for snack time.You can add vegetables and make it wholesome for breakfast too.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup poha (aval) thick or thin
  • 1 onion
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

To Temper

  • 3/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • to taste few curry leaves
  • 1 green chillies finely chopped
  • a generous pinch hing

How to make Poha Upma

  1. Soak poha in water for 5mins (I used thin if its thick it will take some more time).In a kadai : Drizzle oil, add mustard seeds,urad dal green chillies and curry leaves let it then add onions, curry leaves, green chillies. Then add onion, turmeric powder and hing fry till onions turn golden brown.

  2. Add the poha,required salt and mix well. Keep covered for 2-3mins until it becomes fluffy.Poha upma is ready to be served!

Serve with any parathas or variety rice.

Tips

  • You can even add 1 tsp of chana dal while tempering.
  • You can add boiled vegetables , tomatoes etc to this upma.Add roasted peanuts for extra crunch.
  • Soaking time of poha depends on the variety of poha if its thin it takes very less time, if its thick then it needs a little extra time.
