Diwali Sweets – One of the sweet confusion is choosing which sweet this Diwali! While some choose by the availability of time, some choose by safe, easy and instant varieties, some choose to challenge the tough traditional ones and some choose the family favourites.

About Diwali

Diwali is the most fanfare festival we celebrate every year across India. In North India the festival also celebrates the royal homecoming of Rama &Sita to the city of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana whereas in South India the festival marks Krishna’s killing of the demon Narakasura.  Diwali also known as Deepavali is the festival of lights, joy, dress, sweets and crackers. It’s a five day festival – Day 1, known as Dhanteras, is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, and purchasing small items of gold. Day2 is Hanuman Pooja when Hanuman is worshipped before Lord Rama on Diwali. Day3 is Naraka Chaturdashi and main day of Diwali festival. Day 4 known as Govardhan Puja, commemorates new financial year for merchants and Day 5, called Bhai Dooj celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.

Happiness and joy the sweets bring to the family will make us forget the efforts and go for one more mile! I generally do one sweet preferred for kids Milk sweet or Jamun, one sweet for gifting & exchange – Laddu or Burfi before Diwali and make Adhirasam & Seeyam on the day of Diwali. Kids preferred sweet most likely get over before Diwali and hence I do one more round with Halwa or Instant varieties. The sweets I make for gifting & exchange is usually a collective cooking with either friends or neighbours. Shopping, get-together, gifting & exchange of sweets make Diwali a Diwali!

I have posted 30+ Laddu varieties, 25+ Halwa varieties, 15+ Burfi varieties, 10+ Jamun & Peda varieties and 25+ traditional & other sweets collection here. Sweets are sweatier for us at the least and sweeter for the entire family!

Serving & Storage Suggestions

What is a celebration with limitations or measures? – Serve / eat till you get tired of eating!  Suggest to make Diwali chooranamto digest the overloads!

Refrigeration is needed after 2 days when the sweets (if they are still available) are to be consumed for a week & more.

Always store in air tight containers and beware of moving it out of reach for children (as sweets will get over before Diwali) and sugarly(!) elders.
